FireFox 3.1b2

So yesterday Apple released Safari 4 Beta. I tried it out, and it’s very very fast compared to what I used to use, FireFox 3.0.6. For starters FireFox had a lot of history and cache stored, and I think that really slowed everything down. After deleting that FireFox got a little faster, but Safari 4 still had it beat by a noticeable margin. I used Safari for a couple more hours, but in the end I missed my extensions to much. I really can’t use the web like I want to without these:

So I went back to FireFox 3.0.6 for my browsing, but I still wanted that speed I saw on Safari. After looking around the Mozilla site for a little bit, I came over FireFox 3.1 Beta2. 3.1 uses the new Gecko 1.9.1 rendering platform. I noticed a speed bump over 3.0.6, but it’s still not up to par with Safari 4. 3.0.6 also used up a lot of cpu and memory, hopefully I’ll see some improvement with 3.1, but that’s yet to be determined. I have to have it open for another day or two before I know the result.

A common problem you would encounter when upgrading to a version that is yet to be released is compatibility issues with extensions. And like I’ve already stated, I need my plugins. The ones that broke were AdBlock Filterset.G Updater, FireBug and Norwegian Dict. I found that AdBlock Filterset.G Updater was no longer needed with AdBlock Plus, so that got uninstalled. With the two others all I had to do was to find the install.rdf file in my FireFox profile directory. (/Users/$user/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/something.default/extensions/{something-something}/)

In that file you edit MaxVersion to whatever you need.

Example:

<em:maxVersion>3.1b2</em:maxVersion>

Just save and restart Firefox and your extensions should be working again. If you still have problems with getting your extensions to work, please contact the developer of the extension.

RSS Feed

A quick note to those who’s subscribed to kjeserud.orgs RSS feed previously, you have to do it again. After moving over to wordpress.com, instead of using a private server and having the need for hjem.kjeserud.org to work after putting up a server at home the RSS feed has moved to http://kjeserud.wordpress.com/feed/ instead of the previous http://kjeserud.com/feed/. That being said, http://kjeserud.org still redirects to the blog.

I’m probably going to rename the blog to “Eyes on my world” as well, because I feel that “Eyes on the world” sounds like I need to report on what’s going on in the entire world, even tough it feels more natural to write about my own life. It’s a personal blog, not a news site.

Today, 24.02.2009

Today is the day that the lease for Guantanamo Bay was signed, in 1903. Mexico declared it’s independence from Spain in 1821 and it’s the day that Pope Gregory XIII issued a papal bull introducing the Gregorian Caldendar reform in 1582, making the calendar into what we know and use today.

In my life however, no such monumental event has happened (yet), but that does not make this a bad day… Oh no, quite the contrary. Today I’ve picked up my car from the garage, where it got a new front bumper, front fender, a couple new lights, and to my surprise they fixed a small problem with the window on the passenger side.

I’ve also cleaned the apartment today. Vacuuming, cleaned the floors in the kitchen and bathroom and dusted pretty much everything. We changed the bed sheets yesterday, so the place it pretty much picture perfect now. On top of all of that, I’m still sick, I really feel that on my body after so much stuff being done.

The rest of the day looks to be a relaxing day on the couch, watching TV, and perhaps some Star Wars after the GF has gone to bed. With lasagna for dinner and great company from my girlfriend and our hamster, I’m looking forward to the last few hours of 24.02.2009.

Spooks: Code 9

First of all, this have to be read with a snarky British accent. It is about a British television show after all. So I saw the first two episodes yesterday, and I have to admit that it wasn’t quite as bad as I thought. My first impressions when I saw the first ten minutes on the BBC Three website was something along the lines of this:

Just take any random review of Dark Angel or Bionic Woman, do a substitute search and replace the titles with “Spooks: Code9″

But now I’m no longer sure if that’s fair to the show. Yes, some parts were overacted and parts of the script was most likely written by throwing alphabet soup on the wall. But other parts were still OK. I didn’t need the full two episodes, I didn’t even need the whole first episode, to tell that Code 9 will in no shape or form compare with the original Spooks. Not in acting, not in writing, not in directing and it will definitely not come close to the original in plot and suspense. But I’m sure it’ll have some entertainment value, and maybe it’ll even pick up in the acting and writing part, when the cast get more comfortable with each other.

The question that needs answering is of course: “Will I continue to watch the show through it’s first and most likely last season?” Probably.

Getting back into photography

A few years back I started taking up photography as a hobby. Got some passable images out of it, but I always felt held back by my camera, a FujiFilm Finepix S7000. I couldn’t change the lenses, I couldn’t do the post processing I wanted. Life got in the way, so I never got around to buying a dSLR, and the hobby faded away pretty quickly.

Now, however, I’m getting ready for our vacation at the end of the month, almost two weeks in Spain. This time round I wanted to really capture the vacation, not just get 15-20 images of a two-three weeks vacation as has been the custom in my life up ’til now. So I woke Line up the other morning and asked her if I could buy a camera, all before she actually knew what the heck I was talking about. (Always the best way to get what you want.) She said yes, and now I have a brand new Canon EOS 450D coming in the mail, with the standard EF-S 18mm-55mm IS lens. Next purchase will be the Canon EF 135mm f/2.0L USM lens. Too bad I can’t afford it before I leave for Spain, as it would really bring the images up a notch.

Figured I couldn’t get a awesome camera, a fantastic lens (Soon anyway) and a revived hobby if I was gonna be stuck using iPhoto for all my editing, so Aperture is installed on my MBP now as well… Guess that puts a stop to the wondering about which laptop we’re taking to Spain.

First post from my iphone

I’ve finally gotten my iphone! The sim isn’t active until aug 1, but I can do everything else with the phone, including blogging. Figured this was a great way to practice writing.
A lot of people have had problems with crashes, but I’ve only had a single program crash, due to the program Currency. I will post a longer post later, from my desktop ;)
